Vitamin E
Helps maintain a healthy heart. Some scientific evidence suggests that consumption of antioxidant vitamins may reduce the risk of certain forms of cancer. However, FDA has determined that this evidence is limited and not conclusive.
Benefits

  • Works with vitamin C to protect the body
Precautions
  • Individuals taking blood-thinning medication such as warfarin, should use caution in taking high doses of Vitamin E.
  • Vitamin E should not be taken in amounts higher than 1,000 I.U. per day.
  • Vitamin E supplementation should be stopped at least 4 weeks prior to surgery and may be resumed following recovery, as recommended by your physician.

Lipid-lowering Drugs (Fibrates)

Gemfibrozol (Lopid) may decrease circulating levels of vitamin E. Consider supplementing with a multivitamin containing vitamin E to insure adequate levels are maintained.
Drugs for Weight Loss

Xenical has been shown to reduce the absorption of certain fat-soluble vitamins such as Vitamin E. Supplementing with fat-soluble vitamins (in multivitamin) is recommended if using Xenical. Separate doses of the vitamin and the drug by at least two hours.

Anticoagulants / Antiplatelet Drugs

Concomitant use of vitamin E and anticoagulant or antiplatelet agents might increase the risk of bleeding, possibly through inhibition of platelet aggregation and antagonism of vitamin K-dependent clotting factors. Weigh desired benefits of supplement versus potential increased risk of bleeding and use with caution.
Lipid Drugs (Niacin)

Vitamin E in combination with other antioxidant vitamins (beta-carotene, C and selenium) may reduce the therapeutic benefits of combinations of statins and niacin. Monitor lipid levels closely for potential changes in drug efficacy if using these antioxidants while taking statins + niacin.

Metabolic Syndrome

Vitamin E helps stave off damage from free radicals including the oxidation of LDL. If taking niacin + statins, use antioxidants w/caution.
PMS

200-400 IU/day. Supplementing with vitamin E may help reduce some PMS symptoms such as anxiety, craving, and depression.
Blood clotting/ thrombosis

Vitamin E may promote healthy blood flow due to its anti-coagulant properties. Symptoms that blood is too thin includes easy bruising, frequent nose bleeds, and excessive bleeding from minor cuts. See drug interactions for more details.
Dysmenorrhea

200-400 IU/day. Although it is not clear how vitamin E can affect menstrual pain, supplemental vitamin E (200-500 IU) taken before and during initial days of menstruation may reduce menstrual pain and severity.
