Niacin
Niacin, an essential B vitamin, is needed for the proper functioning of various processes in the body including the release of energy from carbohydrates, protein, and fat.
Benefits
  • The metabolically active forms of niacin play a role in the synthesis and/or degradation of carbohydrates, fatty acids, and amino acids. High dose niacin is an accepted medical therapy for treating hyperlipidemia.
Precautions
  • High dose niacin should only be taken under medical supervision due to potential adverse side effects, which include but are not limited to, skin flushing and liver toxicity. The tolerable upper intake level for healthy adults is 35 mg/day.
